Cedar Rapids teachers organized the Cedar Rapids Teachers' Federation in April 1942 and joined the American Federation of Teachers one month later as Local 716. Local 716 actively supported other area unions, took part in national boycotts, and performed community services. The Local also organized the Multiple Talent Center in Cedar Rapids as a place for children to work and learn from each other.
